12 Months in the Saddle The Story of How Two Cyclists Tackled a Dozen Epic Rides

Taking in 12 cycling challenges, one a month for a year, this beautiful book chronicles the experiences of two amateurs and looks at what it takes to tackle some of the most iconic events in road cycling

A cycling book by no other, this account is written and photographed by two committed amateurs who lived out their dream year--a dozen rides that encapsulate the spirit of cycling. Some of the rides, such as Paris-Roubaix and the Tour of Flanders, are classic races in the pro cycling season. Others, such as the ascent of Mount Ventoux, are part of the folklore of the Tour de France, while others are homegrown routes, draemed up and tackled becuase they are fun on a truly epic scale. Lively personal text describes the nature of each route and the landscape and people encountered along the way. It looks at the inspiration for each location in the first place, and the background history and culture of each ride. With unique breathtaking photography and lively text that conveys exactly how it feels to be by turns frozen, baked, lost, exhausted but utterly exhilarated, and inspired, this is a book that will resonate with any aspiring road rat.

Bradley Wiggins Tour de Force
Bradley Wiggins Tour de Force

Rising from an inner city background, abandoned by his pro cyclist father as a toddler, Bradley Wiggins became a prodigious talent. World Junior Champion, World Champion and Olympic Champion were all titles that came his way at a startlingly young age, but what he really wanted was success on the road. 'Wiggo's' reinvention on the path to becoming Britain's first Tour de France winner in over a hundred years of racing is one of sport's most uplifting and inspiring stories. In this captivating and insightful narrative, Wiggins' old friend and colleague John Deering sets this remarkable story against the backdrop of Wiggins' crushing Tour victory, his races along the thousands of kilometres of French tarmac, telling the tale of his brutal procession from Liege to Paris in counterpoint to his fascinating life. From a Kilburn council estate to the Champs Elysees via the Olympics, Paul Weller and the world's most glorious sideburns, the legend of Bradley Wiggins is unravelled like never before.

How to Be a Cyclist
How to Be a Cyclist

Two experts offer this comprehensive guide to modern-day bicycling. No bicycle repair was ever made easier by turning your bike upside down. White shorts are for other people. A helmet perched on the back of your head is perfect if you ride your bike backwards—These and a host of other handy pointers jostle for attention within this A to Z guide to being a cyclist. It's an essential manual and source of wisdom for those who would be kings of the road. Many pitfalls await the unwary middle-aged-man-in-Lycra, but fear not, for the Guide is here to steer you through choppy waters. No more passing out halfway up a hill. No more ridicule in the workplace. No more hurty knee. And no more sock crimes. Pearls of wisdom are scattered throughout this book like rose petals before a princess on her wedding day. For instance, who could deny that life is too short to drink bad coffee? That a noisy bike is marginally more annoying than a whiney toddler? Or that style should ever be sacrificed for speed? Written by experts who know everything there is to know about cycling, yet never forget that there is nothing funnier than a rabbit playing a trumpet, How to be a Cyclist is mandatory reading for all bike riders. "Prepare to have your wanderlust stoked." — The Herald (UK)

It's All about the Bike My Autobiography
It's All about the Bike My Autobiography

Before Bradley Wiggins, there was Sean Yates. Behind Bradley Wiggins, there was Sean Yates. One of only five Britons to wear the yellow jersey in the Tour de France, Sean Yates burst onto the cycling scene as the rawest pure talent this country has ever seen. After turning professional at the age of 22, he soon became known as a die-hard domestique, putting his body on the line for his teammates. Devastatingly fast, powerful, and a fearless competitor, Yates won a stage of the Tour, as well as the Vuelta a Espaa, in 1988, and went on to don the coveted maillot jaune six years later. Having put British cycling on the map as a rider, Yates was soon in demand as a directeur sportif, using his tactical knowledge to inspire a new generation of cyclists to success. And after Team Sky came calling, Yates was the man to design the brilliant plan that saw Sky demolish the opposition in 2012, and for Bradley Wiggins to become the first cyclist from these shores to win the Tour. Straight-talking, entertaining, and revelatory, It's All About the Bike is the story of a remarkable career told from the unique perspective of a man who is immersed in the history of the sport he loves.

Lee and His Cause, Or the How and Why of the War Between the States, Annotated
Lee and His Cause, Or the How and Why of the War Between the States, Annotated

This little book is an excellent source which concisely states the Southern point of view of the War Between the States. It may be read quickly and referred to repeatedly to counteract much of the revision of Southern history that is rampant these days. Four main points are covered: 1. It was primarily a people's war in that the whole heart of Dixie was in it. As a people, the South deeply deplored, but bravely accepted it, and fought it through to the end, the bitter end. 2. Upon the part of the South, it was a justifiable war and the author proceeds to tell how that was. 3. It was a Great War in its magnitude. There were, during the four years, three thousand one hundred twenty conflicts of arms. The total cost of the war has been estimated at $8,000,000,000. Property destroyed is beyond computation. 4. It was a hopeless war. As General Lee said to General Pendleton a day or two before the surrender, "I never believed that we could, against the gigantic combination for our subjugation, make good in the long run our Independence, unless foreign powers should directly or indirectly assist us. But such considerations really made with me no difference. If all were to be done over again, I should act in precisely the same manner. I could have taken no other course without dishonor."

Lee and His Cause, Or, The Why and How of the War Between the States
Lee and His Cause, Or, The Why and How of the War Between the States

"It is well that war is so terrible, otherwise we should grow too fond of it." -Robert E. Lee With the exception of George Washington, perhaps the most famous general in American history is Robert E. Lee (January 19, 1807 - October 12, 1870), despite the fact he led the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia against the Union in the Civil War. As the son of U.S. Revolutionary War hero Henry "Light Horse Harry" Lee III, and a relative of Martha Custis Washington, Lee was imbued with a strong sense of honor and duty from the beginning. And as a top graduate of West Point, Lee had distinguished himself so well before the Civil War that President Lincoln asked him to command the entire Union Army. Lee famously declined, serving his home state of Virginia instead after it seceded. Lee is remembered today for constantly defeating the Union's Army of the Potomac in the Eastern theater from 1862-1865, considerably frustrating Lincoln and his generals. His leadership of his army led to him being deified after the war by some of his former subordinates, especially Virginians, and he came to personify the Lost Cause's ideal Southern soldier. His reputation was secured in the decades after the war as a general who brilliantly led his men to amazing victories against all odds. Despite his successes and his legacy, Lee wasn't perfect. And of all the battles Lee fought in, he was most criticized for Gettysburg, particularly his order of Pickett's Charge on the third and final day of the war. Despite the fact his principle subordinate and corps leader, General James Longstreet, advised against the charge, Lee went ahead with it, ending the army's defeat at Gettysburg with a violent climax that left half of the men who charged killed or wounded. Although the Civil War came to define Lee's legacy, he was involved in some of American history's other turning points, including the Mexican-American War and the capture of John Brown.

Lost The Frank Vandenbrouke Story
Lost The Frank Vandenbrouke Story

Frank Vandenbroucke is the great lost talent of world road cycling. Born in Mouscron in Belgium in 1974, he went on to race for three of the biggest professional teams on the world circuit - Lotto, Mapei and Cofidis, and became the darling of the cycling press for his daring approach to winning races. Between 1993 and 1999 he won a slew of races, including the Liege-Bastogne- Liege (known amongst the cycling fraternity as the hardest race in the world), Het Volk, Paris-Nice, Paris-Brussels and stages of the Tour of Spain. The Tour de France was in his sights. But his personal life was another story; he became addicted to cocaine and succumbed to pressures within his teams to take EPO and other performance-enhancing drugs. The notorious Cofidis team - where he was joint team leader with Scotland's David Millar - eventually broke him. On leaving Cofidis he moved to the Italian team Lampre and then a number of other teams until he effectively ended his career in 2004, aged only 30. Five years later, he was dead.
