A Test of the Central Region White-tailed Deer Habitat Supply Model
A Test of the Central Region White-tailed Deer Habitat Supply Model

A deer habitat supply model has been developed for use in central Ontario forest ecosystems. The model uses Forest Resources Inventory (FRI) data as input and estimates the supply of both winter and summer habitat. This report describes a test of the model, which was run using updated FRI data for four Central Region deer yards. Forage biomass was calculated for each habitat type under two different assumptions, and winter carrying capacity was determined assuming an average yard duration of 90 days and average deer weight of 47 kilograms. The investigators also configured data to test the correlation between summer forage biomass and summer carrying capacity as a test of the summer component of the model. Results include comparisons between reported habitat classification criteria and actual characteristics of habitat types from the four deer yards.
