Not illustrated. 1855 Excerpt: ...for so large a gathering. I could hear voices saying, Rush on" or "come on," frequently. I then went into the Hall and Armories, about 10 o'clock. Didn't look at my watch for the evening. I saw the Mayor, Alderman Carleton, and others preparing to arm themselves. I remarked to the Mayor that I would Jagain order the crowd to disperse, before marching men into the street. Don't recollect that Gen. Fessenden was present. I lost him in the crowd on Congress street. My reasons for going into the Hall, were to see some of the City Officers. I returned to the Congress street sidewalk, Agency side. I then commanded the crowd to disperse, in as loud a voice as I was capable of doing. The Company marched down, and toot their position beside the Agency door on Congress street. Just a the Company arrived, I repeated the command to disperse. I heard Mayor Dow order them to disperse. While the Company was remaining there, I heard stones thrown against the building' which struck over the heads of the soldiers. Soon a few of the armed men left, and went back up the steps of City Hall. The crowd seemed to be very much elated at this. They said "see the d---d cowards leave." Seeing more soldiers leave, fearing the Company would be reduced, I rushed into the gathering, and met one soldier and asked where he was going. He seemed to be somewhat excited, and said he didn't fcnow. I told him to return to his Company where he belonged. He was surrounded by a number of persons who were urging him to leave, and place his gun in the Armory. They fell bacfc when they saw me, and he moved towards the Company.
