This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1902 edition. Excerpt: ...jacket is provided with a tap opening. The upper jackets consist of four side jackets and two end ones. The upper and lower jackets have the inside and outside plates made of heavy flanged steel. In the front lower end jacket of each furnace we provide a bronze tap jacket with a bronze spout, both completely waterjacketed. In each of the middle lower side jackets we furnish a cast-iron tap jacket with spout. These jackets are provided with lugs for fastening them to each other, and are arranged in such a manner as to be interchangeable. In addition to this we furnish binder beams with cross-binders and turnbuckles for binding the jackets and holding them in position. The jackets are also provided with overflow spouts for carrying off the water. They are tapped for inlet pipes and provided with hand-holes and plates for removing sediment. The jackets are all outwardly flanged and riveted, so no rivets come next to the fire of the furnaces. There are eighteen 5-inch improved tuyeres with each furnace, all of the improved box form, with stuffing-box, so as to regulate the length of connecting pipe between tuyeres and bustle pipe. Below the jackets there is a heavy cast-iron base-plate, which in turn is carried upon eight heavy jack-screws, mounted upon a truck made of channel and angle iron, and eight flanged car wheels. There is a mantle frame of heavy beams and channels, to which are attached lugs, which in turn carry a set of hanger rods for supporting both the upper and lower jackets. The mantle frame itself is supported by four heavy cast-iron columns. On top of the mantle frame is a heavy cast-iron deck plate. There are two feed openings, one on each side of the furnace, provided with proper side plates to protect the brickwork, and...
