Easily the most common of Americaโs large wildlife species, white-tailed deer are often referred to as "overabundant." But when does a species cross the threshold from common to overpopulated? This question has been the focus of debate in recent years among hunters, animal rights activists, and biologists. William McShea and his colleagues explore every aspect of the issue in The Science of Overabundance. Are there really too many deer? Do efforts to control deer populations really work? What broader lessons can we learn from efforts to understand deer population dynamics? Through twenty-three chapters, the editors and contributors dismiss widely held lore and provide solid information on this perplexing problem.

Foodies and environmentally minded folks often struggle to understand and articulate the fundamental differences between the farming and food systems they endorse and those promoted by Monsanto and friends. With visceral stories and humor from Salatin's half-century as a "lunatic" farmer, Salatin contrasts the differences on many levels: practical, spiritual, social, economic, ecological, political, and nutritional.

In today's conventional food-production paradigm, any farm that is open-sourced, compost-fertilized, pasture-based, portably-infrastructured, solar-driven, multi-speciated, heavily peopled, and soil-building must be operated by a lunatic. Modern, normal, reasonable farmers erect "No Trespassing" signs, deplete soil, worship annuals, apply petroleum-based chemicals, produce only one commodity, erect Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations, and discourage young people from farming.

Anyone looking for ammunition to defend a more localized, solar-driven, diversified food system will find an entire arsenal in these pages. With wit and humor honed during countless hours working on the farm he loves, and then interacting with conventional naysayers, Salatin brings the land to life, farming to sacredness, and food to ministry.

Divided into four main sections, the first deals with principles to nurture the earth, an idea mainline farming has never really endorsed. The second section describes food and fiber production, including the notion that most farmers don't care about nutrient density or taste because all they want is shipability and volume. The third section, titled "Respect for Life," presents an apologetic for food sacredness and farming as a healing ministry. Only lunatics would want less machinery and pathogenicity. Oh, the ecstasy of not using drugs or paying bankers. How sad. The final section deals with promoting community, including the notion that more farmers would be a good thing.

Excerpt from The Spraying Outfits
The second consideration is how to market the crops with a profit. Economy in production is under control by the farmer and can be figured very closely. Scientific care of the trees is the first step in economy. It not only results in more perfect fruit, which means an economy in grading and packing, but increases the production per acre to the maximum. Labor is becoming more of a problem every year, and such machines as the power sprayer, mechanical grader, etc., not only help greatly to reduce expenses, but are a necessity in the larger orchards.
Grading and packing are two important points that many farmers underestimate. Fruit that is properly graded and packed always brings top prices.
In nearly every case, properly graded and attractively packed fruit will bring a higher price than fruit of the same quality that is not so carefully handled.
About the Publisher
Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This must-read book is packed with fascinating real-life stories about the steam era on the American farm. It features over 500 unforgettable photographs that open a portal back in time. Most of the first steamers for farms were equipped with wheels or skids and were pulled by horses. Steam traction engines later came with various drive trains that enabled them to pull themselves along the open road. Steamers mechanized agriculture, ensured population growth, and transformed the United States and Canada into contenders in world economic markets. In 1910, a Department of Agriculture survey found that 72,000 farm steam engines were in use in the United States. Until the first edition of The Steam Tractor Encyclopedia, no book had presented anything approaching a complete photographic record of agricultural steam engines in America. Dr. Robert T. Rhode is one of the worldโs experts on steam engine history on the American farm, and John F. Spalding has one of the worldโs largest collections of photographs of agricultural steam engines. Combining Rhodeโs knowledge and Spaldingโs photographs has resulted in an expanded edition of the most complete steam tractor encyclopedia in print in the United States or Canada. The new expanded edition of this popular encyclopedia features over 600 historical pictures of steam engines and provides the histories of over 80 companies that built farm steam engines in the United States and Canada. Included are portable engines and traction engines, which today are often called steam tractors. The book also has photos of hit and miss engines and antique gas tractors. The second edition is nearly twice as large as the first edition was. The book has been completely revised and has a totally new design. 400 pages 2011
