Tractors, Kalashnikovs and Green Tea My Life of Tractors and Travels

Ian M. Johnston is a historian, photographer, vintage car collector, and an internationally known expert on tractors. Johnston has lived the history of post-war farming and farm machinery in Australia, and he offers insights into part of Australia's post-World War II history that is rarely recorded or described so humorously. Having worked with the legendary Lanz tractor firm, he eventually formed his own agricultural machinery business, which allowed him the opportunity to travel abroad, visiting various countries, such as Japan and Romania. This delightful memoir offers amusing details of his travels involving tractors.

Tractor The Heartland Innovation, Ground-breaking Machines, Midnight Schemes, Secret Garages, and Farmyard Geniuses that Mechanized Agriculture
Tractor The Heartland Innovation, Ground-breaking Machines, Midnight Schemes, Secret Garages, and Farmyard Geniuses that Mechanized Agriculture

<p>This rollicking ride into machine history follows the innovators, entrepeneurs and hucksters who transformed our world with farm machines. Starting with the turn-of-the-century visionaries who saw that four wheels and a motor could replace for the horse, the book moves swiftly through key early developments to cover the power farming movement of the latter part of the 20th Century--a time when major manufacturers lagged behind and independent builders and farmers began creating their own solutions with a pencil drawing and a welder. The book includes stories of the butcher shop where John Deere secretly designed a completely new line of four-cylinder tractors, to the skullduggery and corporate raiding that took place in fields and back lots as company agents schemed to discover what their dirty ol' competitors had up their sleeves. The book moves all the way up through the creation of the first tractor electronics, the merger movement of the 1980s, and the emergence of the high-technology innovations such as smart farms and auto-guidance which are changing the farm as we know it. This raucous, heartfelt book shines a light on some of the bright minds and innovative companies which emerged from the fertile fields of America's heartland.</p>

Tractor Wars John Deere, Henry Ford, International Harvester, and the Birth of Modern Agriculture
Tractor Wars John Deere, Henry Ford, International Harvester, and the Birth of Modern Agriculture

<b>"Mr. Dahlstrom...has written a superb history of the tractor and this long-forgotten period of capitalism in U.S. agriculture. We now know the whole story of when farming, business and the free-market economy diverged, divided and conquered." <br>—<i>Wall Street Journal</i><br><i> </i><br><br><br>Discover the untold story of the “tractor wars,” the twenty-year period that introduced power farming—the most fundamental change in world agriculture in hundreds of years.</b><br><br>Before John Deere, Ford, and International Harvester became icons of American business, they were competitors in a forgotten battle for the farm. From 1908-1928, against the backdrop of a world war and economic depression, these brands were engaged in a race to introduce the tractor and revolutionize farming. <br><br>By the turn of the twentieth century, four million people had left rural America and moved to cities, leaving the nation’s farms shorthanded for the work of plowing, planting, cultivating, harvesting, and threshing. That’s why the introduction of the tractor is an innovation story as essential as man’s landing on the moon or the advent of the internet—after all, with the tractor, a shrinking farm population could still feed a growing world. But getting the tractor from the boardroom to the drafting table, then from factory and the farm, was a technological and competitive battle that until now, has never been fully told.<br><br>A researcher, historian, and writer, Neil Dahlstrom has spent decades in the corporate archives at John Deere. In <i>Tractor Wars</i>, Dahlstrom offers an insider’s view of a story that entwines a myriad of brands and characters, stakes and plots: the Reverend Daniel Hartsough, a pastor turned tractor designer; Alexander Legge, the eventual president of International Harvester, a former cowboy who took on Henry Ford; William Butterworth and the oft-at-odds leadership team at John Deere that partnered with the enigmatic Ford but planned for his ultimate failure. <br><br>With all the bitterness and drama of the race between Ford, Dodge, and General Motors, <i>Tractor Wars</i> is the untold story of industry stalwarts and disruptors, inventors, and administrators racing to invent modern agriculture—a power farming revolution that would usher in a whole new world.

You Can Farm The Entrepreneur's Guide to Start & Succeed in a Farming Enterprise

Have you ever desired, deep within your soul, to make a comfortable full-time living from a farming enterprise? Too often people dare not even vocalize this desire because it seems absurd. It's like thinking the unthinkable.<br><br>After all, the farm population is dwindling. It takes too much capital to start. The pay is too low. The working conditions are dusty, smelly and noisy: not the place to raise a family. This is all true, and more, for most farmers.<br><br>But for farm entrepreneurs, the opportunities for a farm family business have never been greater. The aging farm population is creating cavernous niches begging to be filled by creative visionaries who will go in dynamic new directions. As the industrial agriculture complex crumbles and our culture clambers for clean food, the countryside beckons anew with profitable farming opportunities.<br><br>While this book can be helpful to all farmers, it targets the wannabes, the folks who actually entertain notions of living, loving and learning on a piece of land. Anyone <i>willing</i> to dance with such a dream should be able to assess its assets and liabilities; its fantasies and realities. "Is it really possible for me?" is the burning question this book addresses.

Your Successful Farm Business Production, Profit, Pleasure
Your Successful Farm Business Production, Profit, Pleasure

Twenty years ago Joel Salatin wrote <i>You Can Farm</i>, which has launched thousands of farm entrepreneurs around the world. With another 20 years of experience under his belt, bringing him to the half-century mark as a full-time farmer, he decided to build on that foundation with a sequel, a graduate level curriculum.<br>Everyone who reads and enjoys that previous work will benefit from this additional information. In those 20 years, Polyface Farm progressed from a small family operation to a 20-person, 6,000-customer, 50-restaurant business, all without sales targets, government grants, or an off-farm nest egg.<br>As a germination tray for new farmers ready to take over the 50 percent of America's agricultural equity that will become available over the next two decades, Polyface Farm in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley stands as a beacon of hope in a food and farming system floundering in dysfunction: toxicity, pathogenicity, nutrient deficiency, bankruptcy, geezers, and erosion. Speaking into that fear and confusion, Salatin offers a pathway to success, with production, profit, and pleasure thrown in for good measure.

Yuba Steam Tractor: Design and Analysis
Yuba Steam Tractor: Design and Analysis

This report on the Yuba Tractor is one of the more instructive studies on modern steam vehicular power. It is, therefore, of great value to anyone considering investing in modern steam. The analysis and the work have been done along with most of the inventing. One does not need to start from scratch on a new steam project. The report was written by Robert L. Harris and the patents are in the names of Harris and Marcus Lothrop. This book is a collection of as much Yuba tractor information as can be found. As mentioned, it is a valuable reference book as well as an interesting story. After the Yuba Tractor was developed Yuba went on to develop and make a prototype of a 12 horsepower steam outboard motor for the Navy, who wanted a quiet propulsion unit. Much of the current interest in steam power is for a small back yard electrical generating plant. A stationary steam plant is much easier to make because weight and volume are irrelevant. Every component necessary for a steam power plant is well-designed and described. The thermodynamics is explained. This book shows how modern steam design has solved most of the percieved problems with steam power. It is a good place to start as well as being the only source in print for this information.
