Cyclopedia of automobiles, gas and oil engines and farm tractors; a complete manual of practical information for owners and drivers of automobiles, ... on electric light and water supply system

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1919 Excerpt: ...The operation of valve grinding consists of placing a small amount of the grinding compound evenly on the face but not very thick. What you can easily pick up on the tip of a pocket knife blade is plenty at one time. The valve is now placed in the cylinder or part that it came out of so that the face rests on the seat. Now take the tool that turns the valve and turn the valve about half way around and then back again. Do this several times. Do not use much pressure as the pressure forces the grinding compound from between the face and seat and makes the work slower. After making several half turns the valve head must be raised and turned to a new position while it is not touching the seat, and then the operation is repeated. If you do not raise the valve from the seat every few half turns you will make ridges on the face and spoil the job. Also, if you turn the valve round and round without reversing the motion and raising it you will spoil the work. In order to raise the valve from the seat every once in a while you can take a light spring that fits around the stem and place it on the valve stem just under the head. This spring should rest on the metal of the cylinder at its lower end and hold the valve about a half inch off the seat. When you press on the valve grinding tool the valve will be pressed down onto the seat, but when you release the pressure it will raise again and you can turn to a new position without pushing up on the stem from below. The valve must be ground for a few minutes and then washed off and carefully examined. When the face and seat are a clean even light gray all around and have no marks or pits or rings at any point the job is finished. The next thing to do is to test the valve for tightness. This can be done by placing pencil m...

Early Farm Tractors A History in Advertising Line Art

<p>Providing an interesting glimpse into the steam traction engines and internal combustion tractors that revolutionized the world of farming, this collection focuses on American tractors from the late 1850s to the beginning of the Great Depression. With farm journal advertisements--dating from 1909 through 1929--this account considers how something as ordinary and utilitarian as a tractor seems to have inherent standards of good design, correct proportion, and beauty. Encyclopedia of American Farm Tractors
Encyclopedia of American Farm Tractors

From Preface - No other farm machine has had such a profound effect on agriculture as the farm tractor. In its infancy, the farm tractor was little more than a stationary engine adapted to a steam engine chassis. During the years required to complete this book, the history of many tractor builders has been elusive. Some were in business for only a short time or have been obscured by the clouds of time. Early tractor books, tractor directories and historical information from manufactures archives were used. (Description by http-mart)

Farmall
Farmall

Farmall tractors are an American farm fixture. Drive through any rural area in the country and it won't take long to spot a Farmall M or H, its red paint faded to rust and spotted with the chips, dents, and dings that hard work inevitably bring. This book traces the roots of Farmall, from the McCormick dynasty to the first Farmall, the appearance of the F-Series and Letter Series, and ultimately, to the effective end of International with the CNH merger. Includes an appendix of Production Dates and Quantities.- Includes new photography of popular models- Includes updates on Case-IH merger as well as re-introduction of Farmall and McCormick brandsAbout the AuthorLee Klancher grew up a few miles outside of the small town of Brill in northern Wisconsin, and has turned his rural roots and passion for publishing into a way of life. Back in 1995, when first approached to do this book, he viewed tractors as useful tools for hauling wood, dragging out deer, and harvesting maple sap. Since that time, he has learned that tractors are prized by collectors for their ability to clutter up the yard, obliterate the paycheck, and raise hell with one's spouse. This is Lee's sixth book, depending on how you count. When not traveling the world in his tireless quest for the perfect mini-corn dog, Lee is working on a follow-up to his last book, Tractor in the Pasture.
